Scripture:

Psalm 95
1 Come, let us sing to the Lord!
Let us shout joyfully to the Rock of our salvation.
2 Let us come to him with thanksgiving.
Let us sing psalms of praise to him.
3 For the Lord is a great God,
a great King above all gods.

Commentary:

95:1–7a The Lord Is King. The members of the congregation singing these verses invite one another to the great privilege of worshiping the Lord, the great God, the great King above all gods. On the kind of kingship attributed to God here, see note on Psalm 93. God is King over creation: it is his, he made it, and he rules over it all (it is in his hand, i.e., under his authority). The marvel of being Israel is that such a majestic King has pledged himself to his people, making them the sheep of his hand (cf. note on 74:1–3). It is no surprise, then, that worship offered to him would be both exuberant (sing, make a joyful noise, thanksgiving, songs of praise) with astonished wonder, and humble (bow down, kneel) before such majesty. The whole person, body and soul, must offer this worship.

Questions:

  • There is a lot of idol worship going on today. An idol is anything we give more attention or importance to in our lives. It could be a career, a relationship, money... anything that takes that number one seat in your life. but Psalm 95 says that He alone is God and is King above all others. What are some potential idols in your life? How do you know that you are keeping God on the throne of your life?

  • Worship shouts SURRENDER and SACRIFICE. It's easy to praise God when things are going great, but we are called to continually offer a sacrifice of praise to Him. And there is great power when we worship God when we don't feel like it, or when we are going through difficulty. There is power in this. When we worship through suffering, God changes us. He won't always change or circumstances, but in the midst of His presence He will ALWAYS change our perspective if we allow Him to. Is there a situation your are struggling with right now in which you would like God's help to shift your perspective? How do you learn to worship through hardships?

Pray:

  • That you would identify and tear down all idols.
  • That God would shift your perspective.

This Week's City 7:

Try to commit to memory!

6. Is the Bible God’s Word? Jesus proved He is God by rising from the dead and said the Old Testament was God’s Word and gave authority to the Apostles to write the words of the New Testament, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, so that all the words of the Bible are God’s Word.
